Not Too Late to Give Blood

For the students, faculty and staff who were unable to donate at last Friday’s Service NC State Blood Drive at Carmichael Gym—which garnered exactly 1,100 pints of blood for the American Red Cross—there’s another opportunity to give on campus at a unique national event next week.

The third-annual Muslims for Life campaign hopes to collect 12,000 units of blood in its nationwide drive honoring the victims of the Sept. 11 attacks, and “to reiterate that Islam truly values the sanctity of life.”

Sponsored by the Ahmadiyya Community USA, the event will be held from noon until 4:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 6, in the lobby of Bragaw Hall. Donors can sign up online. Click “enter sponsor code” and type “NC State.”

Last week, spurred on by an appearance by Chancellor Randy Woodson and student body president Alex Parker, who was one of 375 first-time donors, the Service NC State drive helped alleviate an urgent need for blood, according to the American Red Cross.

Since its inception four years ago, the drive sponsored by the Center for Student Leadership, Ethics and Public Service and University Recreation has collected more than 3,800 pints of blood during this campus-wide one-day event. In all, NC State donates about 2,500 pints of blood per year.

Each unit of donated blood can help care for up to three patients in need of whole blood, platelets or plasma.
