Help Gottfried Help The V Foundation

NC State men’s basketball coach Mark Gottfried is looking to advance to benefit one of his predecessors, the late Jim Valvano.

Gottfried, in his fourth year with Wolfpack, is one of 48 NCAA college basketball coaches participating in the Infiniti Coaches’ Charity Challenge, which raises money for the charity of the participant’s choice. The winner of the 10-week, four-round contest – which allows fans to vote once per day for their favorite college coach—will receive $100,000 for a selected charity.

Gottfried, a former ESPN college basketball analyst, is competing for The V Foundation, the cancer-fighting organization Valvano started just before his death in 1993 and the charity of choice for the worldwide sports cable network.

The first round of voting ends Sunday at 11:59 p.m., with the top 24 coaches receiving votes advancing to the next round. Voting for the second round goes from Monday through Feb. 15, with the top 16 advancing. Voting for the third round goes from Feb. 16 through March 1, with the top four coaches advancing to the finals.

The final round of voting goes from March 2-15, with the winner receiving the grand prize for his selected charity.

Heading into the final weekend of the first round, Gottfried ranks 14th among the 48 participants.

Other coaches participating in the challenge include former NC State player Archie Miller, now the head coach at Dayton; his older brother and former Wolfpack assistant Sean Miller of Arizona; and fellow ACC coaches Brad Brownell of Clemson, Mike Krzyzewski of Duke, Roy Williams of North Carolina, Mike Brey of Notre Dame and Jamie Dixon of Pittsburgh, Jim Boeheim of Syracuse and Tony Bennett of Virginia.

Fans can vote once a day throughout the contest.
