Athletics Elects 2016 HOF Class
Athletics has elected six new members to its NC State Athletic Hall of Fame, the fourth class since the hall was formed in 2012.
Five individuals and the 1974 NCAA and ACC men’s basketball championship team will be inducted as the Class of 2016, which will be celebrated at a ceremony in the fall of next year when Reynolds Coliseum—the eventual permanent home of the hall—reopens after its 16-month, $35 million renovation that began in March.
Joining the team that ended UCLA’s seven-year reign as college basketball champion will be football All-American Dick Christy, who helped Wolfpack football win its first ACC championship in 1957; high-scoring women’s basketball player Linda Page, who was the 1983 ACC Player of the Year and the leader of four consecutive NCAA tournament teams; lacrosse player Stan Cockerton, who remains one of the college game’s all-time leading scorers more than three decade after both his career ended and the school dropped lacrosse as a varsity sport; and turn-of-the-20th-century multisport star Dave Robertson, who gained fame as a major league baseball player with the New York Giants and twice led the National League in home runs; and men’s and women’s swimming and diving coach Don Easterling, who led the Wolfpack to 17 ACC championships, including a string of 12 straight men’s titles.
This is the first class of six members after three consecutive 10-member classes.
“The committee has assembled another remarkable class for the NC State Athletic Hall of Fame, a class that embodies achievement, character and the pursuit of greatness,” NC State director of athletics Deborah A. Yow says. “We look forward to celebrating their story and accomplishments in the NC State Athletics Walk of Fame and History and at another special induction gala.”
