NC Vision Zero Steps Up Highway Safety Effort

On Sunday, the Centennial Campus-based NC Vision Zero will participate in the World Day of Remembrance by displaying pairs of shoes representing those who lost their lives in 2015 on North Carolina roadways. The initiative, managed by NC State’s Institute for Transportation Research and Education, works to eliminate roadway deaths and serious injuries throughout the state.

A total of 1,387 pairs of shoes, donated by NC State employees and collected by the Vision Zero staff, will line the Oval on Centennial Campus, with a program slated for 2-3 p.m. near Engineering Building II. Parking is available on Oval Drive.

North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory launched NC Vision Zero on Centennial Campus in October, along with Transportation Secretary Nick Tennyson, with the goal of cutting roadway fatalities and serious injuries in half over the next 15 years, with a long-term target of zero deaths on North Carolina roadways.

The NC Vision Zero initiative uses data analytics to guide traffic safety efforts and to educate the public. Safety stakeholders, such as the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, are able to use the data to directly link agency enforcement and countermeasure activities with crash reduction goals outlined by McCrory’s Highway Safety Plan.

To complete the project, used shoes of any size, shape or condition are needed and will be collected at various points around campus. For more information, contact Tracy Anderson at tracy_anderson@ncsu.edu.
