Sarah Langer Hall Named Director of NC State’s Institute for Emerging Issues
Sarah Langer Hall has been named director of NC State’s Institute for Emerging Issues, effective January 1, 2023. Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost Warwick Arden made the announcement today.
Langer Hall has served as interim director since former IEI director Leslie Boney retired in May 2022. Since 2019, Langer Hall had served as IEI’s senior manager for policy and programs, where she helped create and manage large-scale interdisciplinary projects and collaborations, create networks of partners across the state to work on challenging issues, and served as a PI on numerous foundation, corporate, and federal grants.
“Sarah is the perfect fit for this position, with her history of service to our university through her various roles at IEI,” said Arden. “She boasts solid experience in providing mission-driven leadership at NC State, as well as collaborating with campus and community partners to deliver critical initiatives serving the state of North Carolina.”
As IEI director, Langer Hall will be responsible for collaborating with various stakeholders to achieve IEI’s mission of finding solutions to the state’s most critical and emerging policy issues. She will provide visionary leadership for the institute, including strategic operational growth in alignment with the university’s strategic plan; will oversee the Emerging Issues Forums and other conferences, workshops and signature events; and will cultivate diverse networks and partnerships that prompt public and private leaders to move ideas into action.
“I am excited to continue the outstanding work that IEI does for people all over the state of North Carolina,” said Langer Hall. “I am looking forward to a bright future for IEI, keeping up the momentum our outstanding staff and partners have made in serving the university and citizens of this state.”
From 2010 to 2018, Langer Hall was IEI’s health policy manager. Prior to joining NC State, she worked for the NC Division of Public Health, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and the NC Department of Public Instruction. She is a volunteer guardian ad litem in Wake County, and received the 2017-18 NC State University Outstanding Extension Service Award.
Langer Hall earned a Bachelor of Science in health science, health care administration and planning from the State University of New York, Cortland College; and a Master of Public Health in health policy, management and behavior from the University at Albany School of Public Health. She earned both a project management certificate and an inclusive excellence certificate from NC State.
