If you do communications as part of your job — regardless of your official job title — you might benefit from taking one or more of the free trainings offered by University Communications and Marketing.

The in-person trainings cover a wide range of practical topics including writing, social media, crisis communications and more.

“We first started this program because faculty members were asking us for help with talking to the media about their research,” said Tracey Peake, a media relations expert with University Communications and the manager of the training program. “After that caught on, we started giving training sessions on how to communicate science to the public, which is often a requirement for the grants that researchers get. And it all just went from there.”

In addition to the trainings in science communications and media relations given by University Communications’ News Services unit, staffers from the Editorial Services unit give trainings in writing news and feature stories, editorial style, and strategic voice and tone. Communicators from the Issues Management unit give trainings in crisis communications, and experts from the Social Media Hub train employees in the basics of social media.

“You don’t have to be a faculty member or a ‘communicator’ per se to take these trainings,” Peake said. “If you work at NC State and you’re engaged in communicating on behalf of the university, and you need what these trainings have to offer, we’re here to help.”

More information about these free communications trainings, as well as links to register online, are available at the NC State News website.
