When you think about libraries, you probably think about books. NC State’s libraries are packed with books, for sure. And they offer so much more: tech-powered spaces that amplify learning, workshops and studios filled with the tools for making, wellness retreats, communal hangouts and plenty of places to study and relax — no matter your mood.

The NC State University Libraries is the unit that leads activities and engagement at our libraries, including our two main libraries: the D.H. Hill Jr. Library on North Campus and the James B. Hunt Jr. Library on Centennial Campus. We trekked through both libraries to show you a few of our favorite places.

Join us on this tour, and you might just find that new spot where the vibes are just right.

Which NC State University Libraries Chair Are You?
The Hunt

A wooden chair with a low, curved back and padded brown leather cushions for the seat and back.

You are The Hunt Chair. You have the feel of a classic but you're proud to be custom-made for the James B. Hunt Jr. Library. You invite people to stay a while and would be equally at home on your own with a good book in a cozy library or gathered around a dining table with friends and family. You're inspired by the world around you and you're thoughtfully designed for your purpose — a timeless reading chair. Your ideal study session is peaceful and smells like books.
Highway Loop Bench

A metal-legged teal leather bench shaped in a curlicue with two loops and flat portions in between and no obvious way to sit upon it, to be honest.

You are The Highway Loop Bench. You embrace form over function whenever possible, but also give people a soft and steady place to land. As both bench and art installation, "Why not both?!" became your permanent mantra during March Madness 2024. People aren't sure how to sit on you, and that's OK! They still find themselves drawn to you and always walk away with something new to think about. Your ideal study session is one that's here for a good time, not a long time.
Perillo Chair

Sleek, white plastic chair shaped out of one loop of plastic that appears to be flattened down on the top to form a back rest, with a red seat cushion, on a swivel base, seated at a round table with a matching chair.

You are The Perillo Chair. People aren't sure how to describe you, and that's by design. You seem complex, but you know, deep down, you're molded out of one simple loop. You are a study of contrasts, constantly swiveling from task to task but solidly rooted in what matters to you. Your ideal study session involves one good friend, great people watching and tons of natural light.
Yellow Stair Benches

A set of yellow stairs with ascending benches built into a portion of the staircase, with four differently colored square seat cushions on each bench.

You are The James B. Hunt Jr. Library Yellow Stair Benches. You make yourself at home in any environment and know that everything's better with friends. You're not afraid of color — in fact, life's too short to choose just one. You have an impressive ability to tune out the world around you and focus, when needed, but your default mode is to be wide open to everything and everyone. Your ideal study spot is on the move (somehow).
COZONI Freya Rocking Chair

Bright outdoor yellow plastic rocking chair shaped kind of like an oval bent in half, surrounded by matching chairs waiting for friends to arrive.

You are The COZONI Freya Rocking Chair. You're loud, bright and, at first glance, hard to identify as a chair. You surround yourself with people who share your passions — your Wolfpack, if you will. You seem kind of silly at first, but you're built to weather any storm and people find you surprisingly grounding. Your ideal study spot is ANYWHERE FUN!
Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman

Sleek, individual black leather and wood mid-century modern armchair with matching footrest, on chrome swivel feet.

You are The Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman. The godfather of midcentury modern chairs, you're someone other chairs look up to. People often stop to talk to you or seek you out and you're not sure why, but we are: you're surprisingly inviting for someone so chic. You're like a warm hug wrapped in designer clothes. Your ideal study spot is somewhere quiet, away from your adoring fans.
