Industrial Engineers Honor Lavelle

Dr. Jerome Lavelle, associate dean for undergraduate academic affairs in the College of Engineering, has won an award for contributions to the engineering economics field.

Lavelle received the Wellington Award from the Institute of Industrial Engineers last month in Reno, Nev. The award is named for Arthur M. Wellington, author of The Economic Theory of Railroad Location, published in 1887.

Lavelle joined NC State in 2000 as assistant dean for academic affairs.  Before that he was on the faculty at Kansas State University for seven years, working in industrial and manufacturing systems. He was a member of the technical staff of AT&T Bell Laboratories from 1985 to 1988 and spent three summers at NASA Kennedy Space Center on an American Society for Engineering Education faculty fellowship, carrying out research in space shuttle and management flow processes.

Lavelle holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in industrial and systems engineering from Ohio University. He received his doctorate in industrial and systems engineering from NC State in 1992.

Previous NC State Wellington Award recipients include Dr. Dick Bernhard, professor of industrial and systems engineering, and the late Dr. John Canada, Lavelle’s Ph.D. adviser and former associate dean in the college.
