Tiny Fossils, Big Tech

At NC State University, a team of researchers is using cutting-edge 3D modeling and artificial intelligence to solve a tricky problem: sorting microscopic fossils no bigger than a grain of sand.

Faculty/Staff Photography, 1st Place by Alice Alonso Unique ecosystems, known as estuaries, form where rivers meet the sea. Imagery from the Landsat 8 satellite reveals the blackwaters of the Suwannee River contrasting against the greenish-blue waters of the Gulf of Mexico, capturing large-scale relationships between upstream change, river flow, and oyster reef health. Upstream changes in land use and land cover impact estuarine environments, leading to degradation of many nearshore habitats.

Wildfire Risks From Hurricane Helene, One Year Later

NC State’s NCICS is collaborating with the North Carolina Forest Service, the US Forest Service and other agencies to address wildfire risks. If this year’s drier conditions persist in the western part of the state, counties that have barely begun to rebuild and recover one year after Hurricane Helene could face another climate crisis.

Not All Proteins Are Equal for Gut Health, Study Suggests

NC State researchers are examining how different protein sources in our diet can have significant effects on our gut's microbiome — and impact various aspects of our health. The findings could help us better understand how to prevent and treat gastrointestinal diseases, which affect at least 60 to 70 million Americans, according to NIH data.

What Comes First: The Chicken or the Housing for a Cage-Free Egg?

For suppliers looking to help meet the rising demand for cage-free eggs, the solution may not be simply to do away with conventional hen houses. New research from NC State University suggests that not all hen breeds thrive in cage-free environments.
