Sen. Hunt endorses Judge Newby – in taxpayer-funded email, News & Observer, Sept. 19, 2012. The Legislative Ethics Committee issued guidance in 2007 advising legislators they cannot use state resources for campaign activities. Then Walter Dalton’s campaigned announced retired Gen. Hugh Shelton, former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff under President Bill Clinton, had endorsed the lieutenant governor. Shelton is a native of Tarboro, attended NC State University and now lives in Carteret County.
