No Fear

Although no university had ever won the Urban Land Institute's national design competition on its first attempt, a team of grad students fielded by NC State had ideas of doing just that. And when the dust settled, the quintet's family-centered plan earned top honors, rising above 116 entries - including those from Ivy-League heavyweights Penn and Harvard.

Safety Sweep

When industrial design graduate student Kathryn Asad won first place in a student traffic safety contest at the New York International Auto Show, judges asked her not to mention the name of her school. It turns out they were embarrassed that students from one university - NC State - swept nearly every award in the competition.

Anything But Typical

A dozen NC State student designers, along with more than 2,500 spectators, celebrated the fusion of fashion and art at Wednesday's Art to Wear fashion show at Reynolds Coliseum. From the use of traditional medium and fabrics to local eateries' fast-food containers, student designs and materials ran the gamut.

Bronzed and Beautiful

Near NC State's free expression tunnel, a trio of five-foot-tall, 1,200-pound wolves stands guard over the hustle and bustle of everyday campus life. The sculptures, funded from non-appropriated, non-student-fee dollars, were formally installed and unveiled Tuesday, Mar. 9, at 2 p.m.

Let There Be Light

An alum is leading the effort to restore NC State's legendary Color Wall, a symphony of light that once dazzled Hillsborough Street. Beginning March 7, a group of paintings by creator (and former NC State design professor) Joe Cox will be available for purchase as part of an effort to raise money to bring the Wall back to its vibrant, color-changing glory.

In Memoriam: Elizabeth Lee

Elizabeth Bobbitt Lee, the first woman to graduate from the NC State School of Design in 1952, died Feb. 2 in Lumberton. She was 81.

Hill Honored

Assistant Professor of Architecture David Hill has won the Vernon F. Shogren award, which honors the memory of Professor Vernon Shogren, who taught architecture at NC state from 1953 to 1955 and 1961 to 1992.
