On April 27, Dr. Trudy Mackay became our ninth current faculty member to gain election to the National Academy of Sciences, an honor that speaks to the significance of her 22 years of work at NC State. Today, she discusses her passion for science and her ability to equip students with the knowledge they need to succeed both in and outside the laboratory.

Safety Sweep

When industrial design graduate student Kathryn Asad won first place in a student traffic safety contest at the New York International Auto Show, judges asked her not to mention the name of her school. It turns out they were embarrassed that students from one university - NC State - swept nearly every award in the competition.

Chasing the Whirlwind

NC State researchers will spend part of their summer finding out what makes tornadoes tick. Dr. Matthew Parker, associate professor of marine, earth and atmospheric sciences, and a team of NC State graduate students will be in Tornado Alley from May 10 to June 13 as part of the VORTEX2 project – the largest and most ambitious effort ever made to understand tornadoes.
