Hartman to Lead Public Relations

Alumnus Fred Hartman has been named the university’s director of public relations, overseeing media relations and constituent communications.

“We are thrilled to have a professional with such broad experience and a strong track record of success join the NC State team,” said Brad Bohlander, the university’s chief communications officer. “Fred’s communications expertise, extensive knowledge of the community and passion for his alma mater will greatly benefit NC State.”

Hartman brings more than 20 years of strategic communications experience to the university. His professional career spans public and private sectors and includes working as a reporter at the News & Observer, managing public relations at Blue Cross and Blue Shield, serving two governors and leading the marketing and communications efforts for a global health company. Most recently, Hartman served as head of marketing for Cisco’s Learning & Development Solutions Group.

“NC State University gave me the foundation to achieve, and has been a part of my family life for the last quarter century,” Hartman said. “I am honored and excited for the opportunity to help promote a community I love so dearly, especially at a time of such great pride with the celebration of our 125th anniversary.”

Hartman graduated from NC State with a bachelor’s degree in political science. He begins his new position Aug. 13.
