NC State Mourns the Loss of Dr. Nash Nicks Winstead

Dr. Nash Nicks Winstead, a former provost and vice chancellor of academic affairs at North Carolina State University, died Saturday, Oct. 18. He was 83.

Born June 12, 1925, Winstead earned his bachelor’s degree in agronomy in 1948 and his master’s in plant pathology from NC State following an honorable discharge from the Army Air Force after World War II. He received a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin in 1953. In 1955, Winstead started his career at NC State as a professor of plant pathology.

In January 1965, he was appointed director of the Institute of Biological Sciences and assistant director of the Agricultural Experiment Station at NC State. On July 1, 1967, he was appointed assistant provost at NC State, and on July 1, 1974, was appointed provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs. He retired on Sept. 1, 1990, and became professor of plant pathology and provost and vice chancellor of academic affairs emeritus. From July 1, 1981, through June 1982, he was acting chancellor.

Winstead is survived by his wife, Geraldine; a daughter, Karen, and her husband, Sidney Ruetz; three sisters, Annie Glover, Lizzie Dawson, and Jean Davis; and a granddaughter.
