Braunbeck to Lead Interdisciplinary Studies

Dr. Helga Braunbeck has been named head of the interdisciplinary studies program in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, effective Aug. 16.

Interdisciplinary studies offers undergraduate minor, major and dual degree programs, as well as a master’s  in liberal studies and a doctorate in communication, rhetoric and digital media.

For the past three years, Braunbeck has directed the international studies unit, part of interdisciplinary studies, and co-directed the Hamilton Scholars program, a dual degree program with the College of Management. Braunbeck, who joined NC State in 1990, has coordinated the German section in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures for 19 years and created an interdisciplinary German studies major. She will continue her responsibilities with the German section and German studies major.

Braunbeck earned a Ph.D. in German literature from the University of California, Santa Barbara. She holds a master’s degree in German literature from the University of Oregon. Her research focuses on contemporary German literature. She teaches courses in German language, literature and culture, as well as world literature in translation.
