Graduate Programs Earn High Marks

Several NC State graduate programs placed among the top in the nation in new rankings released this month by U.S. News & World Report. The magazine’s “Best Graduate Schools” edition will be on newsstands April 3.

Nine programs, all located in the College of Engineering, were ranked among the top 30 in the country; one of those—biological and agricultural engineering— is a joint department with the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. These top graduate programs and their ranks are:

  • 6th in Graduate Nuclear Engineering
  • 8th in Graduate Industrial Engineering
  • 9th in Graduate Biological and Agricultural Engineering
  • 20th in Graduate Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering
  • 20th in Graduate Civil Engineering
  • 21st in Graduate Materials Engineering
  • 27th in Graduate Aerospace Engineering
  • 30th in Graduate Computer Engineering
  • 30th in Graduate Electrical Engineering

Overall, NC State’s College of Engineering was 31st in graduate engineering. It also had other programs ranked in the top 50: environmental engineering was 31st; mechanical engineering was 38th and computer science was 47th.

Not all graduate programs are ranked every year by U.S. News & World Report. NC State has numerous highly ranked graduate programs in a wide range of disciplines—veterinary medicine tied for third in its last ranking in 2011, for example, and statistics ranked 12th in its last ranking in 2010.

The university also had a number of graduate programs ranked in the top 80: business, education, economics, mathematics, non-profit management, physics, public affairs and sociology. For a full list of NC State’s most recent rankings, check the University Planning and Analysis website.

NC State also was a third best overall public university value in U.S. News & World Report’s 2012 undergraduate rankings, which were released last fall.

Besides U.S. News & World Report rankings, NC State traditionally performs well in other best value rankings, including those released by Kiplinger’s and the Princeton Review. Those rankings measure quality and affordability.
