Friday Award to Cherokee Chief

The Park Scholars will present the 14th annual William C. Friday Award to Michell Hicks, principal chief of the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Nation, at a public ceremony, 5:30 p.m. Monday, April 15, at the Hunt Library.

The award, named for the former head of the UNC system who died last fall, recognizes individuals who emulate Friday’s leadership, scholarship, character and service. Friday helped evaluate the award nominees just a few days prior to his death.

The Eastern Band of the Cherokee Nation is a self-governing nation in western North Carolina with 14,000 members and 56,000 acres of land. Hicks, a certified public accountant and the youngest chief to lead the nation, has helped the tribe adopt a new economic strategy.
