NC State Shines in Media Spotlight

As one of three major research universities in the Triangle, NC State is used to sharing the media spotlight with its neighbors in Durham and Chapel Hill. But President Obama’s appearance on campus yesterday, and his announcement that NC State will lead one of the nation’s most important research endeavors, switched on a media floodlight.

From the New York Times to CNN to the Wall Street Journal, the nation’s top media outlets made it clear that NC State isn’t standing in anybody’s shadow.

In fact, NC State’s leadership of the $140 million Next Generation Power Electronics National Manufacturing Innovation Institute is just the latest example of the university’s momentum in driving educational innovation. NC State is the only university in the nation leading two active NSF Engineering Research Centers: the FREEDM Systems Center and the ASSIST Center. The university also spearheads one of the nation’s most successful public-private partnerships — the Nonwovens Institute — which has sparked a textiles revival and attracted $700 million in industry investment to North Carolina in the last decade.

Chancellor Randy Woodson recently took the helm of the board of directors of APLU, the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities, one of higher education’s top research, policy and advocacy organizations.
