Leave Policies for Adverse Weather
One way to tell that spring is coming to North Carolina is the advent of the weather roller coaster: sunny and warm one day, wintry mix the next. Last week saw a particularly volatile mix of weather conditions, and the university’s operational status changed frequently as a result.
If you’re a nonessential employee who missed work due to adverse weather last week, check each time slot below to learn how you should handle leave for that period.
Normal operations
— Monday 2/23
— Wednesday 2/25, 10 a.m. – 10 p.m.
— Friday 2/27, 11 a.m. – midnight
If you missed work during these periods, you have three ways to handle leave for that time: use accrued comp time, use leave time or take the time off without pay.
Status 3 (classes cancelled) or status 4 (adverse weather advisory)
— Tuesday 2/24, 9 a.m. – Wednesday 2/25, 10 a.m.
— Wednesday 2/25, 10 p.m. – Thursday 2/26, 3:40 p.m.
If you missed work during these periods, you have four ways to handle leave for that time: use accrued comp time, use leave time, make the time up within 90 days or take the time off without pay.
Status 1 (university closed)
— Thursday 2/26, 3:40 p.m. – Friday 2/27, 11 a.m.
If you missed work during this period, you don’t need to use comp time, use leave time or make up missed time. In addition, if you did report to work during this period, you can take comparable time off within 12 months.
