North Carolina’s 2016 primary election will be held in less than two weeks on March 15. Faculty, staff and students who can’t vote on election day can take care of their polling-place business now. Early voting started on Thursday and will continue through Saturday, March 12, with multiple locations in Wake County near NC State’s campus.
In addition to the presidential primaries and other state and local elections taking place, one item on the primary ballot is of particular interest to the NC State community.
The Connect NC bond will secure $2 billion in funding for the state, with roughly two-thirds of that amount going to higher education. Specific to NC State, $160 million of the bond will be used to fund two important projects on Centennial Campus: the Engineering Oval and the Plant Sciences Initiative.
The bond will also include funding to support agriculture, state parks and the National Guard, all with no tax increase.
On March 15, most students who live on campus and in University Housing apartments will vote at the Pullen Community Center, located at 408 Ashe Ave., in Raleigh. This location replaces the Freedom Temple Church on Royal Street as a polling place.
Exceptions include North Hall residents, who will vote at the Brooks Avenue Church of Christ at 700 Brooks Ave., and E.S. King Village residents, who will vote at the Method Community Center at 514 Method Rd.
Students who live off campus and are registered to vote in Wake County can locate their polling location at this Board of Elections site.
All voters should also be aware that under new North Carolina voting regulations, valid state-recognized identification is required to cast a ballot. Appropriate forms of identification include a North Carolina driver’s license, a state identification card, a U.S. passport and a military or veteran’s identification card, among others. Any voter without a valid form of identification can cast a provisional ballot at their regular polling location.
