Lampreys are ancient, they look weird, and they don’t have jaws. What’s not to love?
Listen as we talk lampreys with Lily Hughes, research assistant professor at NC State and the curator of ichthyology at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences.
Lampreys are older than dinosaurs. In fact, their evolution preceded the evolution of jaws – and we don’t mean sharks.
And while some lampreys are parasitic feeders, other species spend the majority of their lives as filter feeders, playing an important role in nutrient cycling in streams.
We’ll also discuss the role that lampreys may have played in a king’s death, and what makes an ichthyologist tick.
