Rural Sociologists Elect Schulman

Dr. Michael Schulman has been elected president of the Rural Sociological Society, an organization that promotes the study of rural life through research, extension and education. His term will run from August 2012 to August 2013.

Since 2008 he has edited Rural Sociology, the journal of the Rural Sociological Society.

A faculty member since 1977, Schulman is a William Neal Reynolds and Alumni Distinguished Graduate professor. His research focuses on occupational health and injury among young workers, public health impacts of farm vehicle accidents on public roads and relationships between labor market restructuring and changes in community quality of life.

He has twice served as graduate program director for the Department of Sociology and Anthropology. He will join the Department of 4-H Youth Development and Family and Consumer Sciences on July 1. Since 1998 he has served as adjunct professor in the Gillings School of Global Public Health at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Schulman is a former member of the Board of Collaborators of the North Carolina Institute for Health and Safety in Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. He has also served as a senior research fellow with the University Research and Professional Ethics Program.
