Family Ties

Having already possessed strong familial connections to the university, senior business administration major Nick Giron said his decision to attend NC State was an easy one.

“My family has been a great supporter of NC State for a long time, so when I got my acceptance letter it was almost a necessity for me to come to State,” he said.

Giron’s father served NC State as an ROTC instructor, while his cousin – defensive tackle DeMarcus “Tank” Tyler, who signed a reserve/futures contract with the Chicago Bears earlier this month – safeguarded the Wolfpack on the gridiron for three years starting in 2003.

While the Fayetteville, NC, native said he chose NC State to keep his family’s school tradition and spirit alive, Giron is busy making his own mark. Through his involvement with NC State’s Center for Student Leadership, Ethics and Public Service, Giron is working with to develop a philanthropy project to raise awareness of AIDS in Africa.

During the fall, he’ll help those a little closer to home as a Hispanic Symposium orientation counselor for new students.

“It’s important to me to share and celebrate my culture with future Hispanic students entering NC State,” said Giron, who is half-Salvadorian.

When he’s not busy helping new students or those in need, you’ll probably find Giron either playing alto saxophone with the NC State Jazz Ensemble or behind the camera. He recently made a short film, Those Red Lips, which was shot on and around campus in the film-noir style used heavily in 1940s’-era crime detectives.

“The black-and-white murder mystery allowed me to experiment with that genre’s spectacular trademark lighting and style,” said Giron, who submitted his work to the popular Campus MovieFest.

Even better, Giron said, was making the movie with his family and friends at NC State.
