Pink Power

Faculty and staff can put their personal power to work in the fight against breast cancer by lacing up their shoes and hopping on pink treadmills.

Miles 4 Kay, a partnership with the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund, will raise 10 cents for every mile logged during February 2011. The goal is to raise at least $1,000 in honor of the late women’s basketball coach, a step at a time.

To invest a little sweat equity in breast cancer research, just use one of the two pink Cybex treadmills on the third floor of Carmichael Gymnasium during the month of February.

Hoops 4 Hope

Reynolds Coliseum will be a sea of pink at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 30, when NC State plays its annual Hoops 4 Hope women’s basketball game. The treadmills will fit right in.

To kick off the Miles 4 Kay campaign, three treadmills will be available for fans during the game against Florida State. Featured events include a silent auction, halftime recognition for cancer survivors and commemorative tickets and T-shirts.

Coach Yow was in her second public fight against cancer when she conceived Hoops 4 Hope six years ago. That led to the Think Pink initiative of the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA), which raises awareness and funds for breast cancer research through a variety of events at the high school and college levels.

And of course the Yow fund is connected to the V Foundation for Cancer Research, established in honor of the late Jim Valvano, who led NC State’s men’s basketball team to a national championship in 1983.
