Earthwise Winners Recognized

The Campus Environmental Sustainability Team presented Earthwise awards this week to a faculty member, staff member and student for championing environmentally sound practices on campus.

Andy Fox, Anne Tazewell and Megan Cain each received a plaque made of 100 percent recycled glass and a check for $200.

Fox, an assistant professor of landscape architecture, was honored for sustainable construction. In 2010, he and a class of graduate students designed and installed a rain garden at Syme Residence Hall. The project transformed a forgotten piece of land with multiple stormwater issues into a aesthetically pleasing and functioning site. Their success led to a partnership with University Housing for $200,000 in improvements at other residence halls over the next five years.

Tazewell, program manager for the Clean Transportation Program at the North Carolina Solar Center, was recognized for her efforts to promote alternative energy. She helped conceive the Clean Fuel Advanced Technology project that led the university to install Raleigh’s first Level 2 electric vehicle charging station at the Joyner Visitor Center. In addition, she helped NC State fund an E85 (ethanol) station to increase biofuel use in the campus fleet.

Cain, a senior majoring in environmental technology, landed two internships to help pay for college while expanding her knowledge of sustainability. In her time with NC State’s Waste Reduction and Recycling office and the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources she has organized a cleanup of Schenck Forest, acted as volunteer coordinator for WE Recycle, volunteered to co-lead the first Costa Rica Alternative Service Break trip, organized several NC State Earth Day Concerts and assisted with green events on campus.
