Sullivant Elected to Mathematics Post

Mathematics professor Seth Sullivan has been elected chair of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) activity group on algebraic geometry.

Sullivant, former secretary for the group, will serve a one-year term. SIAM, which has 13,000 individual members, advances the fields of applied mathematics and computational science.

Sullivant’s research is focused on algebraic statistics and algebraic biology. He develops and applies techniques from algebra to theoretical and computational problems in statistics and biology. He also studies graphical and log-linear statistical models, as well as combinatorial, computational and commutative algebra.
