State Fair Begins Thursday

The North Carolina State Fair is underway and with ample involvement from extension agents, faculty and students. Here are some highlights:

  • The Department of Food, Bioprocessing & Nutrition Science’s wildly popular Howling Cow ice cream sells again at the State Fair this year. We recommend braving that long line for a new Howling Cow flavor, banana pudding.
  • Look for N.C. Cooperative Extension agents answering consumer questions such as how to plant your lawn, what crops are grown in North Carolina, etc., in the Cultivate a Career exhibit.  Experts on hand include parenting expert Robin Roper and Christy Perrin, an expert on rain-scaping and home water quality.
  • Milk a cow at the Animal Science Club’s booth in the Exhibition Hall. Animal Science student volunteers are supporting (that means reorganizing the hay and cleaning up the poop) the prize-winning animal section.
  • In the garden area, extension master gardeners will answer questions on all things gardening-related.
  • College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) students will field questions about veterinary education in the Scott Building.
  • CVM faculty are also monitoring animal exhibits and are on-call for any animal health issues or emergencies. (One year, for example, the world’s largest horse became an emergency colic case.)
