They go together like funnel cakes and powdered sugar. Like a tangle of spiral fries and ketchup. Like roasted corn and butter.

Howling Cow ice cream and the North Carolina State Fair are a match made in food heaven.

And this year, you’ll have a new reason to wait in that famously long line for a mountain of fresh-scooped ice cream: the new Key Lime Pie flavor.

With a subtly tart key lime base studded with graham cracker pie pieces, Key Lime Pie joins favorites like Wolf Tracks (vanilla ice cream, chocolate fudge and peanut butter cups), Cookie Dough and Banana Pudding.

“One of our student workers, Garrett Jenkins, had the idea for the flavor, and then we received a really neat ingredient,” said Carl Hollifield, assistant director of the NC State Dairy Enterprise System. “It’s a key lime emulsion that has key lime zest in it, which we thought was fantastic and we needed to use in an ice cream.”

You can find Howling Cow ice cream, as always, under the big white tent near the Sam Rand Grandstand entrance.

And if you miss the fair, never fear. Key Lime Pie will be available at the scoop shop in the Talley Student Union for a limited time.
