Retrieving Essential Items From Poe Hall

Good morning,

We write to you with an update on items that remain in Poe Hall. Over the past several days, the university has been working closely with our environmental consultant partners to get guidance on the retrieval of essential items that our faculty and staff may need as we move toward the spring semester.

Requests for Item Retrieval

With continuity in mind, we ask that you please think about items that remain in Poe Hall that you will need to successfully start and complete the spring 2024 semester. Identify those items that are essential for teaching, research and administrative operations and request them via the appropriate form linked below:

The university will evaluate all requests and will do its best to fulfill them in the weeks ahead. Items must be easily identified to be retrieved. Out of an abundance of caution, the university will have each item retrieved and cleaned under the guidance of the environmental consultants before it is returned to you. Examples of items that can be retrieved include textbooks, teaching materials, recruitment and donor materials, laptops, monitors and personal technology items.

Please note that we are not planning a full clean-out of Poe Hall at this time. Any items that are determined to be kept or should remain in Poe Hall will be secure, as access to the building continues to be limited. Preliminary data suggests that the transfer of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) from potential sources to occupied spaces has been limited and that simple cleaning steps can effectively mitigate exposure to PCBs that could be present on surface dust.

Cleaning for Items Previously Removed

We know that you may have questions about necessary precautions around items that were previously removed from the building. We have sought guidance from our consultants regarding the cleaning of those items.

Out of an abundance of caution, if you did take items like laptops and textbooks from the building earlier this year, wipe down the item’s exterior surface with a wet wipe (such as a wet rag, paper towel, or Clorox or Lysol wet wipe) to remove dust, and then dispose of the wipe in the trash. Soft items like clothing or rags used for wiping can be laundered normally to remove dust. Hand-washing is also a good practice.

Next Steps

We thank you for your continued patience and understanding as we continue the more comprehensive review of the building and work to ensure continuity of operations in the weeks ahead. College leadership will be in touch with you about any logistics for new office space and updated locations for spring classes.

The information shared today has also been added to the Poe Hall Updates website for your reference. Please continue to seek help and resources if you need them and share any specific concerns or questions about the building by calling 919-513-3358 or emailing ncstateemmc@ncsu.edu.

Thank you,
