Bridge tenders, News & Observer, August 12, 2012. The collapse of the Interstate 35 West bridge in Minneapolis in 2007 was a tragedy. The bridge had passed federal inspections, though clearly it had longstanding weaknesses. Now, researchers at NC State University and the University of Maryland are working on wireless technology that can be put on stress points and serve as warnings when weaknesses develop. NC State is at the forefront of this potentially life-saving technology.
