‘I Belong In a Barn’, Southern Pines Pilot, Oct. 22, 2012. Each October, the N.C. State Fair beckons visitors with bright lights, whirling rides and the savory-sweet smell of deep-fried food. First held in 1853 by the North Carolina State Agricultural Society, the fair was an annual gathering to showcase the latest scientific advancements in farming and to highlight the best livestock, crops, machinery and homemade goods produced around the state.
