Charron Writes Biography

Dr. Katherine Mellen Charron, assistant professor of history, is the author of Freedom’s Teacher: The Life of Septima Clark, which will be published by the University of North Carolina Press this fall.

Clark, a former public school teacher and civil rights leader, developed a citizenship training program in the mid-1950s that enabled thousands of African Americans to register to vote and then to link the power of the ballot box with strategies for individual and community empowerment.
