No Mystery to TheatreFest’s Popularity

Don’t miss out on the last weekend of TheatreFest 2016. A reliable source at Arts NC State says tickets are limited for some performances of The Hollow, so call soon.

Speaking of The Hollow, CVNC calls it “a most splendiferous evening of theatre.” If you’re not familiar with the plot of this Agatha Christie classic, here goes: An unhappy game of romantic follow-the-leader explodes into murder one weekend at The Hollow, home of Sir Henry and Lucy Angkatell. Dr. Cristow is at the center of the trouble when his mistress Henrietta, ex-mistress Veronica and his wife Gerda simultaneously arrive at the hall.

Shows are scheduled now through Saturday night at 7:30, Sunday at 2 p.m. Call 919-515-1100 (1-5 p.m., M-F) or order online at go.ncsu.edu/tfest-tix

Something’s Afoot

Another TheatreFest offering, a murder mystery musical comedy titled Something’s Afoot, is also getting positive reviews.

“This grand and hilarious spoof of the mystery genre includes everything you would expect: a mysterious gathering, a wickedly crafted murder, and a crackerjack cast to put it all together,” says CVNC.

Spoiler alert: 10 people are stranded in an isolated English country house during a raging thunderstorm. One by one they’re picked off by cleverly fiendish devices. As the bodies pile up in the library, the survivors frantically race to uncover the identity and motivation of the cunning culprit. (Sounds like one of our weekly staff meetings.)

You’re also invited to attend a free event, “And Then There Were Six.” On Saturday, June 25, University Theatre welcomes six mystery writers to discuss their works, and the challenges and perks of creating these puzzling tales. The event begins at 6:30 p.m. in Thompson Hall, and is open to all.

This gathering of North Carolina mystery writers includes Katy Munger, Sarah Shaber, J.D. Rhoades, Brynn Bonner, Cat Warren and Donna Everhart.
