Gerler Wins Counselor Education Award
Dr. Edwin Gerler received Pennsylvania State University’s Counselor Education Award for outstanding contributions to the profession.
Gerler, a professor in the curriculum, instruction and counselor education department, has been at NC State for more than 30 years. He completed a doctorate at Penn State in 1975 after working as an elementary school counselor in Millville, Pa.
Gerler is the founding editor of the Journal of School Violence. He co-authored one of the most popular textbooks in the field, School Counseling in the Twenty-First Century, fifth edition, with colleague Dr. Stan Baker. Gerler and Baker are collaborating on a project to expand the use of technology in school counseling, developing a school counseling activity network called scan21st.com.
Gerler recently began work on a National Science Foundation grant to explore how computer gaming affects students’ interest in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) careers.
