Building a Future

As the Wolfpack makes final preparations for its first game Saturday vs. Western Carolina, more than a dozen NC State football players can sit back, smile and think, "Well, this isn't the hardest thing I've done in the last three months." No matter what happens on the football field, it may not be as rewarding as the volunteer work they did this summer with Habitat for Humanity.

A lightning rod figure, Gibbs takes more shots today than he ever did at NC State - and is enjoying every minute of it.

Honoring a Legend

The NC State Student Government is about halfway towards its goal of raising $85,000 to create a memorial for late women's basketball coach Kay Yow. The garden, called the Coaches' Corner, will eventually honor several coaches who have built championship teams at NC State. But Yow was the students' choice to be the first honoree.

Cousins Who Serve

First Lieutenant Christopher Young has never needed to write a letter to the parents of one of his Marines, explaining why their son won't be coming home from Afghanistan. And that's why the former NC State football player from Raleigh was recently awarded the Bronze Star for bravery – protecting his platoon during a hellacious month in Afghanistan's southern Helmand Province. Some of the support Young received while in the field came from a squadron of Cobra attack helicopters – just like the one his cousin, Captain Drew Wimsatt, was flying over the region. Wimsatt, a defensive end for the Wolfpack from 2000-02, has completed several tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, and recently sent NC State head football coach Tom O'Brien, a former Marine officer, a flag that Wimsatt kept in the cockpit of his helicopter.

Saving History

In the dark and dusty recesses of Reynolds Coliseum, NC State's athletics history has been waiting for a crew of liberators. Its freedom is close at hand, as GoPack.com managing editor Tim Peeler, Wolfpack football wide receiver Donald Bowens, athletics marketing intern Blake Scher and others have begun to uncover everything from Bill Cowher's long-lost personnel file to 1930's film footage featuring NC State coaching legend Everett Case guiding a squad of high schoolers through the 1937 Indiana state playoffs.

Calm, Cool and Collected

One of the main reasons NC State sophomore Matt Hill has been so successful this season is his calm, even-keeled demeanor the golf course. Well, even Hill got a little excited Thursday afternoon when his birdie putt on his 53th hole of the 112th-annual NCAA Men’s Golf Championship fell in the cup, all but guaranteeing him NC State’s third individual national championship this spring.

Best in the ACC

NC State basketball coach Sidney Lowe, with a nationally recognized recruiting class neatly tucked away for the upcoming school year, received more good news on Wednesday, when the NCAA released its Academic Progress Rate data. The Wolfpack’s basketball squad scored a 995 out of a possible 1,000, which is the highest score among the 12 ACC schools and in the top 10 percent of all NCAA Division I schools.
